Usage of Urns in ancient Tamil Civilisation.

Urns were often used to comprise dead person to bury them in soil. These urns are also called as  "Eemathaazhigal" . Notes about them are featured in sangam literature.

The urns were used to contain the dead person's personal belongings and bones and then they would be buried underground. These urns were found in many places around Tamil Nadu by Archeologists.

Tamil Martial Arts - KaLarippayitru

Why do Tamil people keep Pedestal for their homes ?

A pedestal is a stage-like place in homes. These pedestals are mostly located in front of the houses, so that other people who aren't the part of the family (pedestrians), could spend the day or night at the pedestal when they're exhausted. This is the main purpose of pedestals in most of the tamil people's homes. Proves of this statement could be found in old tamil literatures.

Kaanggeyam Bulls

Some of us have heard of them, while some of us don't. These bulls with humps, are nowhere to be found in the world rather than in Tamil Nadu, India. These rare specie are employed in one of the traditional sport, "YaeRu Thazhuvuthal" or "Jallikkattu", a bravely man supress these bulls, and if he successfully suppress the raged bull, he's considered as the winner. This most expected event in India takes place in most places in Tamil Nadu during Ponggal (Thanksgiving Festival).

These specie, is now considered as the most endangered animal genus in Tamil Nadu, India. This is because, "Most of the farmers who have these bulls, are having hard time taking care of these bulls and they are being sold to the places outside Tamil Nadu", said Kaarthikeya Sivasenaathipathi during the Sangam Naangu (Club 4).

The same kind of Kaangeyan Bulls were found in Indus Valley (Sindhu Samaveli) about 5000 years ago. The artifacts and fossils  of  farm animals  that are owned by people of that civilization found during the research are the proof for this statement, he said. The same kind of bulls with humps on their back also found to be existed during that era.  This proves the existence of Tamilians lived in the Indus Valley.

(Anichcham Malar) - Anagallis Arvensis

Anagallis Arvensis, (Anichcham Malar) is one of the 99 flowers, which had been mentioned in Kurinji Paattu, literated by Kabilar. This flower is said to wilt once it'd been smelled. Comparison between this flower to women had been made  by tamil folks, that once a woman had been touched by a man (which is considered to losing virginity in indian culture), she would kill herself,  just like how this flower would wilt once it had been smelled.

Banana Leaf Food

Pottu [Black Dot]

Traditionally, the area between the eyebrows (where the pottu is placed) is said to be the sixth chakra ajna, the seat of "concealed wisdom". According to followers of Hinduism, this chakra is the exit point for kundalini குண்டலினி  energy. The pottu is said to retain energy and strengthen concentration. It is also said to protect against demons or bad luck. The pottu பொட்டு  also represents the third eye.

In modern times, pottus are worn by women of many religious dispositions in South Asia and Southeast Asia.
Red represents honor, love and prosperity, hence it was worn traditionally by women to symbolize this.

The red pottu பொட்டு has multiple meanings which are all valid at the same time. This is also a spiritual symbol.
  • By one simple interpretation it is a cosmetic mark used to enhance beauty.
  • From Vedic times, the pottu பொட்டு was created as a means to worship one's intellect. Therefore it was used by both men and women. The worship of intellect was in order to use it to ensure our thoughts, speech, actions, habits and ultimately our character becomes pure. A strong intellect can help one to make noble decisions in life, be able to stand up to challenges in life with courage, and recognize and welcome good thoughts in life. The belief was that on this a strong individual, a strong family and strong society can be formed.
  • In meditation, this very spot between the eyebrows is where one focuses his/her sight, so that it helps concentration. Most images of Buddha or Hindu divinities in meditative pose with their eyes nearly closed show the gaze focused between eyebrows.
Swami Muktanand writes 'auspicious Kumkum குங்குமம் or sandal wood சந்தனம் paste is applied (between the eyebrows) out of respect for inner Guru. It is the Guru's seat. There is a chakra (center of spiritual energy within human body) here called Ajna chakra meaning 'Command center'. Here you receive the Guru's command to go higher in Sadhana (spiritual practice) to the 'Sahasraar' (seventh and final chakra) which leads to Self realization. The flame seen at the eyebrow is called 'Guru Jyoti'  .
The encyclopedic dictionary of Yoga informs that this 'Ajna Chakra' is also called the 'Third eye'. This center is connected with the sacred syllable 'Om' and presiding it is 'ParaaShiva'. After activation of this center, the aspirant overcomes 'Ahamkar' (ego or sense of individuality), the last hurdle on the path of spirituality.

Vibhuti (Sacred Ash)

Vibhuti (விபுதி ) is the sacred ash used in religious worship in Hinduism. The main ingredient of Vibuthi is a special kind of wood, but several other substances, such as milk and ghee, prescribed in scriptures are also added. These substances are burned in a sacred fire (Homa) [Omam ஓமம்] . Vibhuti is placed on the forehead as it is considered sacred and holy. Many devotees add an amount to the tongue to receive the blessings of the deity.

The ash has several symbolic meanings:

  • When eaten, Vibuthi imparts the blessings (Aaseervaatham ஆசீர்வாதம்) of the divine.
  • Placed on the forehead of devotees, it serves as a sectarian mark (Tilaka) [Thilagam
  • In worship connected with Lord Shiva it is a symbol of purity and is one of the main sacraments given at pooja (Poojai பூஜை ) in all temples and shrines.
It serves as a reminder to the believer to cast away selfish and worldly desires that wrap the self in maya, and calls to mind the story of how Shiva burned Kama (the god of desire) to ashes when Kama attempted to break Shiva's focus on the Divine Truth.

Thai Ponggal (தை பொங்கல்)

Thai Ponggal (தைப்பொங்கல்) is a harvest festival celebrated by Tamils. Pongal in Tamil means "boiling over" or "spill over". The boiling over of milk in the clay pot symbolizes material abundance for the household. Thai Pongal, celebrated at harvest time, is traditionally intended to thank the Sun God and farmstead livestock that helped create the material abundance.

The saying "Thai Pirandhal Vazhi Pirakkum" (தை பிறந்தால் வழி பிறக்கும்) meaning "the commencement of Thai paves the way for new opportunities" is often quoted regarding the Pongal festival. The festival usually occurs from January 13 — 15 in the Gregorian calendar i.e. the last day of the Tamil month Maargazhi to the third day of Thai.

Ponggal is traditionally dedicated to the Sun God Surya (சூரியன் Sooriyan). Tamils thank the solar deity for the good harvest and consecrate the first grain to him on this 'Surya Mangalyam' (சூரிய மாங்கல்யம்).

The holiday denotes the start of the Tamil month of Thai (தை). It marks the day when the Sun purportedly shifts northwards. It signifies the commencement of Uttarayana, which represents the northward journey of Sun. The days get longer in the Tamil lands.

The history may well be more than 1000 years old although some are of the view that the festival is older. Epigraphic evidence suggests the celebration of the Puthiyeedu during the Medieval Chola empire days. It is thought that Puthiyeedu meant the first harvest of the year. The Sangam era literary work, the Paripaadal, refers to a fast by unmarried girls in honor of the God Vishnu in the month of Thai, known as the Thai Nonbu. The link between that fast and today's harvest festival needs to be further researched. Tamils refer to Pongal as "Tamizhar Thirunaal" (meaning "the festival of Tamils").

Pongal Pandigai (பொங்கல் பண்டிைக)

Ponggal itself falls on the first day of the Tamil month of Thai (January 14 or 15). It is celebrated by boiling rice with fresh milk and jaggery in new clay pots. The rice is later topped with brown sugar, ghee, cashew nuts and raisins. This tradition gives Pongal its name. The rice is traditionally cooked at sun rise.

The moment the milk boils over and bubbles out of the vessel, the tradition is to shout of "Ponggalo Ponggal!", introduce freshly harvested rice grains in the pot and blow the sanggu [சங்கு] (a conch). Tamils consider it a good sign to watch the milk boil over as it connotes good luck and prosperity. The newly cooked rice is traditionally offered to the Sun God at sunrise to demonstrate gratitude for the harvest. It is later served to the people present in the house for the ceremony. People prepare savories and sweets such as vadai, murukku, paayasam, visit each other and exchange greetings.

Tamils draw kolams/rangolis on the door step, consume sugar cane, prepare sweetened rice, milk and jaggery in new earthen pots and dedicate it to Sun God. The family elders present gifts to the young.

Mattu Ponggal ( மாட்டுப்பொங்கல்)

Cattle play an important role in the traditional Indian farmstead be it with regards to the provision of dairy products, its use for ploughing and transport and its provision of fertilizer. This explains the Vedic reference to cattle as wealth. On the day after Ponggal, cattle are felicitated. In rural Tamil Nadu, adventurous games such as the Jallikkattu or taming the wild bull are features of the day. Maattu Ponngal is intended to demonstrate our recognition and affection to cattle and decorate them with garlands, apply kungumam (kumkum) on their foreheads and feed them good food.

Maattu ponggal & the famous Alanganallur Jallikattu

Maattu ponggal is intended to honor the cattle that worked hard throughout the year. The farm bulls are given a bath, their horns painted and adorned with new sarees in some places. In Alanganallur, bulls are set free in a ground where youth who hold on its hump until the victory line are considered victorious. In Alanganallur which is located 17 km Northwest of Madurai Jallikattu is conducted with enthusiasm.

Kanu Pongal (கனுப்பொங்கல்)

Kanu Pidi (கனுப்பொங்கல்) is a tradition that the ladies and young girls of the house follow. Women feed birds and pray for the well being of their brothers. Women of the family place different kinds of coloured rice, cooked vegetables, banana and sweet ponggal on a ginger or turmeric leaf and invite the crows, which descend in hordes to share and enjoy the "Kaka pidi, Kanu pidi" feast. Women offer prayers in the hope that the brother-sister ties may remain forever strong like the family of crows.

"Kakkapidi Vaithen, Kanupidi vaithen, Kakkaiykkum Kurivikkum Kalyanam". "Kakkapidi vaithen, kanupidi vaithen, kakkaikootam pole engal koottamum kalayaamal irukkanum."

Kaanum Ponggal (காணும் பொங்கல்)

This is a time for family reunions in Tamil Nadu. Brothers pay special tribute to their married sisters by giving gifts as affirmation of their filial love. Landlords present gifts of food, clothes and money to their workforce. During Kaanum Ponggal (the word kaanum means "to view"), people visit relatives and friends to enjoy the festive season. In the cities this day is synonymous with people flocking to beaches and theme parks to have a day out with their families. They also chew sugar cane and decorate their houses with kolam. This day is a day to thank relatives and friends for their support in the harvest. Although it started as a farmers festival, today it has become a national festival for all Tamils irrespective of their origins or even religion. It is as popular in urban areas as is in rural areas.

Kolam

Kolams are thought to bestow prosperity to homes. Every morning in southern India, millions of women draw kolams on the ground with white rice powder. Through the day, the drawings get walked on, rained out, or blown around in the wind; new ones are made the next day. Every morning before sunrise, the floor of the owners house ,or where ever it may be, is cleaned with water and the muddy floor is swept well for an even surface. The kolams are generally drawn while the surface is still damp so that it is held better. Occasionally, cow-dung is also used to wax the floors. In some cultures, cow dung is believed to have antiseptic properties and hence provides a literal threshold of protection for the home. It also provides contrast with the white powder.

Decoration was not the sole purpose of a Kolam. In olden days, kolams used to be drawn in coarse rice flour, so that the ants don't have to work that much for to long for a meal. The rice powder is said to invite birds and other small critters to eat it, thus inviting other beings into one's home and everyday life: a daily tribute to harmonious co-existence. It is a sign of invitation to welcome all into the home, not the least of whom is Goddess Lakshmi, the Goddess of prosperity. The patterns range between geometric and mathematical line drawings around a matrix of dots to free form art work and closed shapes. Folklore has evolved to mandate that the lines must be completed so as to symbolically prevent evil spirits from entering the inside of the shapes, and thus are they prevented from entering the inside of the home.

It used to be a matter of pride to be able to draw large complicated patterns without lifting the hand off the floor standing up in between. The month of Margazhi was eagerly awaited by young women, who would then showcase their skills by covering the entire width of the road with one big kolam.

The ritual kolam patterns created for occasions such as weddings can stretch all the way down streets. Patterns are often passed on generation to generation, from mother to daughter.

Mokkumaavu ) was used for Kolam.

Seasonal messages like welcome (நல்வரவு Nalvaravu) is used in Kolam. Volunteering to draw kolam at temple is sometimes done when a devotee's wishes are fulfilled.

Kaarthigai Deepam (Thirukaarthigai)

One of the earliest references to the festival is found in the Ahananuru, a book of poems, which dates back to the Sangam Age (200 B.C. to 300 A.D.). The Ahananuru clearly states that Karthigai is celebrated on the full moon day (pournami பௌர்ணமி ) of the month of Karthigai, as per South Indian calender. It was one of the most important festivals (peruvizha பெருவிழா) of the ancient Tamizhs. Avaiyyar, the renowned poetess of those times, refers to the festival in her songs. Karthikai Deepam is one of the oldest festivals celebrated by the Tamizh people. The festival finds reference in Sangam literature like Ahananuru and the poems of Auvaiyar.

Lord Shiva appeared as a endless flame of light before Lord Vishnu and Lord Brahma, who each considered himself supreme and said that the matter could be tested if the two could search for Lord Shiva's Head and feet. Lord Vishnu took the form of a boar (Tamil:Varahan வரஹன் ) and delved deep into the earth, Lord Brahma that of a swan (Tamil: Annamஅன்னம்) and flew towards the skies. Lord Vishnu failed in his search and returned. But Lord Brahma, chancing upon a piece of Thaazhampoo தாழம்பூ , a flower, learnt from it that it had been floating down for thirty thousand years from Lord Shiva's head. He seized upon this and claimed to Lord Shiva that he had seen the other's top. Lord Siva realized the falsehood and pronounced that there would never be a temple for Lord Brahma in this world. He also interdicted the use of the flower Thaazhampoo in his worship. Lord Shiva appeared as a flame, this day is called Maha Deepam.

Thosai

A reference to Thosai occurs in the Tamil Sangam Literature from around 6th century AD. Edward Farnworth mentions the first reference to Thosai in Tamil Sangam literature in the sixth century A.D.

Rice is ground finely to form a batter. Rice can be uncooked or parboiled. The mixture of Ulunthu உளுந்து (black lentils) and rice can be replaced with highly refined wheat flour to make a maida dosa or semolina for a rava dosa.

A thin layer of the batter is then ladled onto a hot tava (griddle) greased with oil or ghee (clarified butter). It is spread out evenly with the base of a ladle or bowl to form a pancake. It is flipped to heat both crusts and removed from the griddle when the crust becomes dry. Dosa are served hot, either folded in half or rolled like a wrap.

Ingredients:

  • 3 cup rice (Arisi
  • 1 cup split black gram lentil (Ulunthu
  • 1 tsp salt (Uppu
  • 1 tsp fenugreek seeds (Venthayam
  • oil as required (Ennei எண்ணெய்

Method

  • Soak rice, Ulunthu and Venthayam for 6 hours.
  • Then grind them to a fine thin batter by adding little water.
  • Add salt to it and leave it covered for 12 hours for fermentation.
  • Now heat a non stick tawa and spread 1 tbsp of the batter on the whole of the pan.
  • Grease all the corners and then cook it on the other side also.
  • Put little water on the tawa and wipe it with a clean cloth before making each dosa.
  • Serve them hot with hot sambhar and chutney.
