வரையாடு மேற்குத் தொடர்ச்சி மலைகளுக்கே உரிய சிறப்பினங்களில் ஒன்றாகும். இவை 4000 அடி உயரத்திற்கு மேலேயுள்ள மலைமுடிகளில் மட்டும் வாழும் பண்புடையன. மிகவும் அழிந்துவரும் இனங்களில் ஒன்றான இவ்விலங்கு தமிழ் நாடு மற்றும் கேரளா மாநிலங்களில் ஒரு சில குறிப்பிட்டப் பகுதிகளில் மட்டும் காணப்படுகிறது. வரையாடு தமிழ் நாட்டின் மாநில விலங்கு என்பதும் தமிழ்நாட்டில் சில நூறு வரையாடுகளே எஞ்சியுள்ளன என்பதும் குறிப்பிடத்தக்கவை. இதன் சராசரி ஆயுட்காலம் காடுகளில் ஏறக்குறைய 9 ஆண்டுகள் இருக்கலாம் எனக் கணக்கிடப்பட்டுள்ளது.

- பெயர்விளக்கம் -

வரையாடு = வரை + ஆடு. வரை என்பது மலை, மலையுச்சி, குன்று, குவடு ஆகியப் பொருள்களை உணர்த்துகின்றன. ஆடு என்பது விலங்கினங்களில் ஒன்றான ஆட்டின் இனத்தைச் சார்ந்தது என்பதை உணர்த்துகிறது.

'ஓங்குமால் வரையாடு வரையாடுழக் கவினுடைந்துகு பெருந்தேன்' என்று சீவகசிந்தாமணியில் வரும் அடி இதன் பெயர் முற்காலத்திலிருந்து தமிழ்நாட்டில் வழங்கியதையும், இதன் மலைச்சிகர வாழ்க்கையையும் விளக்குகிறது.

The Nilgiri Tahr

The Nilgiri tahr (Nilgiritragus hylocrius) known locally as the Nilgiri ibex or simply ibex, is an ungulate that is endemic to the Nilgiri Hills and the southern portion of the Western Ghats in the states of Tamil Nadu and Kerala in southern India. These tahrs inhabit the open montane grassland habitat of the South Western Ghats montane rain forests ecoregion. At elevations from 1,200 to 2,600 metres (3,900 to 8,500 ft). It is also the state animal of Tamil Nadu. Hunting and poaching in the nineteenth century reduced their population to as few as 100 animals by the early 20th century. Since that time their populations have increased somewhat, and presently number about 2000 individuals. 

Names

In the Tamil Language it is called varaiaadu, the term being composed of two Tamil words, wurrai a precipice, and aadu, a goat.
